Presentations

I really appreciated Group 1’s presentation. It shows that communications amongst us is very important when it comes to getting things resolved. This can also help to understand other people cultures, beliefs, point of view, and other things that make a certain individual act the way they act. For example, it is very common in the American culture that once a child hits 18 he is identified as an adult and they are sent off to college to begin their own life. As a Hispanic this doesn’t tend to happen. You are considered a kid until you are able to move out and financially support yourself without your parents’ help. It is very different cultures and beliefs. As well as I am sure its different from people in Europe and the Asia’s. It was also interesting to learn the way that a culture becomes dominant is through economic or political power. But I am also not surprised since that is what runs most countries. People who run countries tend to care more about their political position and money than most other things.  It was eye opening to listen to different things and how race or where you were born geologically can depend on your beliefs, way you look and even the way you look at yourself.

Depending where you are from can depend what type of language you talk, how your dress, what you eat a lot more things. Group 1 really went in depth about this things and explained them very well. For example, European culture impacts communication because they tend to have more formal and indirect communication styles. Even Asians, Africans and arabs all have different ways of speaking and their own language. They all have different dialogue that they use to be able to understand one another. Maybe some have similar words but they have completely different meaning. This also happens in countries in south American. Where 1 word could have different meaning depending on what country you are from. As well as different phrases can mean different things. This is all due to the religion or what the main ethnicity is in that country. Which is very intriguing if you think about it. Not only religion and ethnicity have a role to play but also your Gender. While Males tend to use communication to share information or find solutions. Females tend to use it more for venting and sharing what is on their mind. Even if the person is from the same country and same ethnicity they could use communication different just based on what their gender is .

The quality of life can also change due to the countries religion. America is known to have freedom of religion so you can say certain things in this country and be ok that will in other countries it could lead to incarceration or even death. Mostly very strict countries around middle east have very strict religions. So going against it can lead to people being hurt or end up in jail. I remember a few years back women were going in protest to be able to walk freely instead of always covering their faces. For this they faced a lot or prejudice and some were even given jail time for going against the countries religion of choice. But this can also give bad connotations. A very well known connotation is that Muslim are mostly always targeted in the airports because of the way they look. Some blame them for terrorism when they personally maybe aren’t even in the slightly connected to those types of groups. Group 1 goes into this in slide 9 talking about religion and Muslims.

Economic status can also very from part of the world you are from. Most people if not all from south America are considered middle class. Most of them don’t know how to invest, or how to build a business etc. Them not knowing this or not being taught this just goes on for generations. If there is something the parents don’t know then most likely they wont teach their children resulting in the children most of the time ending up in the same place as their parents when they grow old. But in countries like Dubai or Qatar most families come from money or well established businesses. This is then taught to the kids and in result just keep leading on generational wealth.

Age and generation also have a a good amount of effect when it come to social status and communication. Most of the old  generation value self sacrifice, while the generation next to it question authority and aren’t willing to sacrifice themselves for someone else well being. Every generation has their own beliefs which most of the people born in that generation can do or agree with. It is kind of amazing seeing how each generation has their own set of beliefs even though they are all one giant ecosystem.

In conclusion, group 1 did an excellent job summarizing all of these individual aspects of intercultural communication. Everything they provided was very insightful and made sense. Everything was well pasted together and I really enjoyed watching them teach us about every little thing that has to do with intercultural communication and why people communicate the way they do. An other people do it differently. I learned a lot of different things that at first I thought didn’t really matter such as gender or your sexuality. These things can impact the way people view what we say and teach us how we can better communicate with each other so we can all live in a better conversed world. Group 1 presentation was nothing less than amazing as I already said but I felt like they needed more praise on how they did. I feel like everyone who paid attention to the class when they were speaking definitely learned a thing or two. Being able to learn more about how to communicate with each other and the best way to go about things.
